Advice needed: Teaching Writing to Adults

Postby Graham » 20 Jun 2008, 15:49

I'v'e been offered the chance of giving a one-off 30 - 40 hour course on writing for some office staff of the EGAT. It's a group of 6 women aged 26 - 39 who will mainly need to draft email replies to farangs. Their current level of English is roughly pre-intermediate. has anyone got any quick suggestions for a coursebook? I have no idea how to teach writing as a stand-alone subject. Any help much appreciated :D

Hi Graham

This http://www-writing.berkeley.edu/tesl-ej/ej30/r2.html is a summary by Elizabeth Cramer of Brigham Young University, of a series of textbooks on writing which I have used many times with great success with students in Thailand. They are suitable for students from Grade 10 through university 1st & 2nd year English Foundation courses as part of a bachelor degree programme.

There are three books in the series but according to the level of the sudents, you can start with any book. Dependiing how you pace the lessons, each book should offer enough material for your 30 - 40 hours. For your ladies I would suggest the middle book:

Ready to Write: A First Composition Text (3rd edition)
K. Blanchard & C. Root (2003)
New York: Longman
Pp. iv + 156
ISBN: 0130424633 (paper)

Dist.: DK Book, Bangkok

And here is the publisher's catalogue page for the series:

DK Book are too expensive try Chulalongkorn University BKSTR very good prices and if you buy the books they will send them to you. Call this number 0891704746 they will also give you discount. Ready to write are fantastic books, as they come in a series from beginning to the upper levels such as paragraph writing, and essay writing. They come complete with everything just ask. ;)
